BEFORE WE START, WHAT YOU NEED TO THINK ABOUT
So when your minor has their driving permit you need to know-
- Before they can start their driving practice with a parent/guardian, your child needs to complete their first behind the wheel driving lesson with a professional school instructor.
- After that first lesson, the driving instructor will sign off on their permit. This allows the minor to start practicing with a parent/guardian or other licensed driver over the age of 25.
TIP
-
-
-
- Driving schools tend to book up. So do not wait to find one.
- Read reviews online.
- Ask other parents who they used.
-
-

Bring your focus, leave your distractions. And be proud. This is an exciting milestone in your life.

ON THE DAY OF THE DRIVING TEST
- You will have to be at least 16 years old
- You will have had your permit for at least 6 months
- You have completed 6 hours of behind the wheel driving training with a professional driver/school
- You have completed 50 practice hours with a licensed California driver over the age of 25 (10 of these hours must be done at night)
BRING WITH YOU TO THE DMV
___ Your permit (with the two signatures: 1) instructor signature and 2) your parent/guardian signature
___ Your professional behind the wheel instructor will give you a slip upon completion (DL 388/DL 400D)
___ Proof of car insurance (the car that you are driving must be insured; your name does not have to be on this car’s insurance at the time of the driving test)
___ Two proofs of residency documents
___ Minor’s birth certificate (since the minor’s name most likely will not be on these residence documents)
___ Social Security card (just in case; have heard stories about different items being asked to provide)
AFTER YOU PASS AND GET YOUR DRIVER’S LICENSE
___ Get your driver’s license and take a photo of your license paper (do not post license info on media)
___ Do you have a car kit? (emergency stuff, gas cash, etc.)
___ Be mindful of the rules (DMV has quick reference handouts what the minor driver can do at what age; who can be in car with a minor driver i.e.)
AND HERE’S A LITTLE FUN IDEA TO CELEBRATE YOUR PASSING

This last one is my favorite. I got really good at making these towards the end (made one for each boy in my carpool).
Now, since you are happy and celebratory because you passed, I would like you to commit to ” DRIVING 3D”

Make your commitment to safe driving. You matter. Your choices matter.
…well, because, we are all depending on you. Hope to see you out on the road. Proud of you!
